Bethells Beach (Te Henga)
Enormous dunes, a tidal lagoon and a long walk over sand before you reach the water.

The northernmost of the west coast beaches, with dunes big enough to lose children in and a lagoon behind. A river splits the main surf beach from O'Neill Bay, and you wade it. The Te Henga walkway runs the clifftops from here, though it's often closed. Remote, unpatrolled outside summer, and a long way from the nearest shop.
