Kohimarama Beach
Calmer, wider and less crowded than Mission Bay next door.
More room to spread out than its famous neighbour, with a shallow entry and a grassy strip behind the sand. Sailing club at one end, playground behind. It's sheltered from the southwest, so it works on days the west coast doesn't. The tide goes a long way out and leaves firm mud, which is worth knowing before you commit to a swim.
