Le Roys Bush Reserve
A deep native gully in the middle of Birkenhead, with a boardwalk dropping all the way to the harbour.
Nīkau, a stream and a boardwalk running down to Little Shoal Bay, all of it wilder than a suburb has any right to be. The birdsong closes over you within a minute of leaving the road. It's steep and stepped, so leave time for the climb back out. People often finish at the Northcote pub, which seems fair enough.
