North Head (Maungauika)
Tunnels, disappearing guns and the best view of the harbour mouth there is. Bring a torch.

A fortified headland riddled with Victorian tunnels and gun batteries guarding the harbour entrance. The underground sections are properly dark, so a torch turns a walk into an adventure. People have argued for decades that more tunnels are sealed up in there, and the arguing hasn't stopped. Steep in places, with Rangitoto across the water the whole way up.
What to expect
Former military fortifications atop a grassy headland, with tunnels & guns, plus harbour views.
