Piha Beach
Great surf and rough, beautiful water on black iron sand, with Lion Rock splitting the bay.
Aucklanders will tell you this is one of the most dangerous beaches in the country. They're not exaggerating. Swim between the flags, and stay out when the lifeguards have packed up. Kitekite Falls is about two and a half hours return from the Glenesk Road end. There's a little penguin colony in the dunes, so keep the dog on a lead.
