Rangitoto Island Scenic Reserve

A lava field under the largest pōhutukawa forest in the world, with a summit track, caves to duck through and a view back at the city that reframes the whole place. There are no shops of any kind, so bring water and food. Bring a torch for the caves too, and wear real shoes. It's sharp lava underfoot.
